Dr. Alexandre F. Liautard
Dr. Alexandre F. Liautard (1877-1915) was a founding father of the AVMA. He held the first and only senior editorship of the American Veterinary Review until 1915, when it became the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

Dr. Pierre Augustine Fish
Dr. Pierre Augustine Fish (1915-1918) was the first editor of the newly renamed JAVMA. Just three years later, Dr. Fish relinquished his post to join the military; however, he remained a frequent and valued contributor to the JAVMA.

Dr. William Haddock Dalrymple
Dr. William Haddock Dalrymple (1918-1919), president of the Association in 1907, had to relinquish his post as editor within a year because of ongoing health issues.

Dr. John Robbins Mohler (1919-1923) had a short and fairly unremarkable tour as editor of the JAVMA; however, he contributed to the Journal for many years before and after filling the top post as an associate editor.

Dr. Horace Preston Hoskins
During Dr. Horace Preston Hoskins’ lengthy tenure, he oversaw such innovations as the use of full-color illustrations and the addition to the JAVMA of a section of abstracts.

Dr. Louis A. Merillat
Dr. Louis A. Merillat (1939-1950) kicked off his tenure with the introduction in 1940 of the AJVR. Both Journals continued to grow under his leadership. By 1941, JAVMA subscriptions exceeded 7,000, and the AJVR was approaching 2,000.

Dr. Raymond C. Klussendorf
Dr. Raymond C. Klussendorf (1950-1951) had been promoted from associate editor and assistant executive secretary to the editor-in-chief position. But early the next year, he announced that he would be leaving the AVMA to pursue other opportunities.

Dr. C.R. Donham
Dr. C.R. Donham (1951-1952) was named editor-in-chief on an interim basis in April 1951 until a suitable replacement came aboard.

Dr. William A. Aitken
Dr. William A. Aitken (1952-1959) used his position to help the profession better understand and control such diseases as shipping fever, erysipelas, and hog cholera. He also grew JAVMA from 12 issues per year to 24, and AJVR from four issues to six.

Dr. Donald A. Price
Dr. Donald A. Price (1959-1971), in addition to the special reports and editorials he published in JAVMA, was the author or co-author of numerous scientific reports in other professional journals. Dr. Price later became AVMA executive vice president.

Dr. Arthur Freeman
Dr. Arthur Freeman (1972-1984) introduced numerous innovations to the Journals, such as popular features that, in some cases, still run in the JAVMA today. The JAVMA also started regularly publishing artwork on its cover and adopted a larger format.

Dr. Albert J. Koltveit
Dr. Albert J. Koltveit (1985-1995) reorganized the table of contents and introduced several well-liked features such as “Reflections” and the still-popular “Animal Behavior Case of the Month.” He was known for his sensitivity to the needs of his readers.

Dr. Janis H. Audin
Dr. Janis H. Audin (1995-2009) oversaw the conversion to desktop publishing and saw to it that all the Journals’ content appeared online starting in 2000. She also initiated practice-relevant features in areas such as dentistry and anesthesiology.

Dr. Kurt J. Matushek
Dr. Kurt J. Matushek (2009-present) oversaw the writing of the original JAVMA style manual as an associate editor. As editor-in-chief, he led the move for the AVMA Board of Directors to adopt a “Policy on Editorial Independence” for the AVMA Journals.
