Taking care of business

Veterinary compounding, association governance, and foreign veterinary college accreditation were among the topics addressed during the June 6-8 meeting of the AVMA Executive Board.

Dr. Jan Krehbiel, the board’s District V representative, chaired the meeting, at which two Chinese VMA officials were in attendance. Dr. Wang Qingbo and Yuan Leilei had been at the AVMA headquarters in Illinois the previous two weeks learning about Association operations here. The associations have had a close relationship since the Chinese VMA’s formation in 2009.

Board members received a report from the Task Force on AVMA Governance and Member Participation and initiated the next phase of the governance reform process (here). They updated AVMA policies on compounding (here) and swine castration (here) and adopted a new policy concerning the transportation and welfare of hoofstock and poultry (here).

The Executive Board reaffirmed the AVMA Council on Education’s accrediting of foreign veterinary colleges (here) and approved a course of action for a slate of legislation under consideration in Congress (here). Plans were greenlit for a summit of veterinary association leaders to discuss the steps needed to build on existing veterinary workforce and economic databases.

A policy addressing the relocation of pets for adoption was forwarded to the AVMA House of Delegates along with a proposal to grant membership to the American Academy of Veterinary Acupuncture. The HOD may consider each during its regular annual session, July 18-19 in Chicago. The board recommended delegates approve both proposals (see JAVMA, July 15, 2013).

In addition, the board appointed Dr. Gary Holfinger of Northwood, Ohio, as an at-large member of the AVMA Group Health & Life Insurance Trust.
