Around 50 yoga enthusiasts woke early July 14 to take part in some gentle stretching and poses—all while being swarmed by goats. Rocky Mountain Goat Yoga brought 10 of their finest small ruminants to socialize with and stand on participants during two sessions of goat yoga at Sculpture Park. The organization works with local goat rescues to keep a sustainable herd.

Convention-goers flocked to Food Truck Friday in search of a bite to eat between continuing education sessions. The lunchtime crowd was greeted by a variety of culinary options just outside of the Colorado Convention Center. WeChef Kitchen, Farm to Truck Colorado, Samos Grill, and Dude Bro Taco served patrons everything from tacos to gyros to Korean fried chicken sandwiches.

Saturday evening meant singing karaoke, playing a game of bags, and having drinks with friends for those who attended Technician Appreciation Night, the Young Professionals Event, or Live Life, Love All at Dierks Bentley’s Whiskey Row.
The American Association of Veterinary State Boards sponsored the technician portion of the evening while the AVMA’s “My Veterinary Life” podcast hosted and sponsored the event for veterinarians who are just starting out as well as for veterinary students. Hill’s Pet Nutrition sponsored the Live Life, Love All event, which first began in 2018. An estimated 1,000 people attended throughout the evening.

Relaxing and recharging was the order of the day at the AVMA Center for Wellbeing. Attendees had a chance to learn about AVMA’s wellbeing resources, get tips on staying healthy, feel rejuvenated at the Tea Bar, or taking time to paint rocks or make their mark on the coloring wall.

Latonia Craig, EdD, and Lisa Greenhill, EdD, senior director for institutional research and diversity at the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), were interviewed by Dr. Rena Carlson, 2023-24 AVMA president, during the “Champions of Change: A Discussion with Two Chief Diversity Officers” session on July 16. Danielle Johnson, American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) executive director; Dr. Janet Donlin, AVMA CEO; and Dr. Lori Teller, 2022-23 AVMA president accept a $200,000 donation from Purina’s Dr. Jason Gagné, who is the company’s director of veterinary technical communications. Purina had previously committed to donating $1 to the Foundation’s Reaching Every Animal with Charitable Care (REACH) Animal Care Program to support the REACH program for each purchase made on Purina Pro Plan’s VetDirect website through June 30, 2023.

Runners, walkers, and joggers gather early on July 15 for a tour of Denver. They saw many sites along the downtown route, including the Mile High Benchmark set in the face of the 13th step of the Colorado State Capitol. The route ended at the Colorado Convention Center in front of the Big Blue Bear.

Dr. Karen Shenoy (right), chief veterinary Officer for Hill’s Pet Nutrition, looks on at visitors of the Street Clinic, put on by the AVMA and The Street Dog Coalition.
The free clinic, sponsored by Merck Animal Health, Hill’s, and Western Veterinary Partners, was meant to offer pet owners experiencing homelessness free veterinary examinations for their animals and complimentary food and essential supplies.
In all, 41 animals—32 dogs and nine cats—were helped by 70 volunteers, ranging from veterinarians and veterinary technicians to veterinary students practice managers, and other human-animal bond advocates.

This year’s AVMA Concert featured Ne-Yo and special guest rapper and beatboxer Doug E Fresh on July 16 at the Fillmore Auditorium. Ne-Yo, an acclaimed R&B singer-songwriter and three-time Grammy award winner, performed his hit singles “So Sick,” “Miss Independent,” “Let Me Love You,” and more.

Participants in the “Honeybee Laboratory for Beginners” had a chance to get hands-on instruction on July 14 at the Butterfly Pavilion near Denver. Drs. Terry Ryan Kane and Amy Franklin lead them through what personal protective equipment is needed, how to conduct a hive inspection, identify the components of the hive, and learn to identify the Queen, the worker bees (female), and the drones (male).
