The Association of Shelter Veterinarians (ASV) held its annual member reception on April 19 in Baltimore.
Awards
Meritorious Service Award

Dr. Jeanette O'Quin (Ohio State '93), Commercial Point, Ohio. Dr. O'Quin is an associate professor in the Department of Veterinary Preventive Medicine at The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. She was previously with the Ohio Department of Health's Zoonotic Disease Program. Dr. O'Quin has worked to reduce rabies in humans and animals and to improve the health and welfare of companion animals. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine and American Board of Veterinary Practitioners, she is a founding member and a past president of the ASV and served as an editor for the revision of the ASV Guidelines for Standards of Care in Animal Shelters in 2022.
Veterinarian of the Year

Dr. Tony Malone (Tuskegee '00), Houston. Dr. Malone is medical director at the Houston Humane Society. As director, he has improved clinic programs and increased awareness in the community about vaccination and preventive medicine. Dr. Malone previously served as chief veterinarian at BARC Animal Shelter & Adoptions, Houston's municipal animal shelter. Earlier in his career, he was an emergency clinician with the Veterinary Emergency Referral Group, worked part time as a clinical veterinarian at the Texas Heart Institute, served as a professional services veterinarian with Royal Canin, and was a partner doctor at Banfield Pet Hospital. Dr. Malone has trained and mentored more than 700 veterinary professionals in shelter medicine and high-volume spay–neuter surgery.
