AAALAC International appoints Dr. Gary Borkowski as CEO

Starting in October, Dr. Gary L. Borkowski will serve as the new CEO of AAALAC International, a nonprofit that promotes the humane treatment of animals in science through voluntary accreditation and assessment programs.

Dr. Borkowski is currently global director at AAALAC International, a position he’s held for the past five years. In this role, he has been responsible for overseeing the accreditation program for AAALAC International, which encompasses more than 1,100 accredited units in 50 countries or regions. He succeeds Dr. Kathryn Bayne, who is retiring after working 30 years at the organization, the last seven as the CEO.

Dr. Borkowski has a long history with AAALAC International, previously serving as an ad hoc consultant, a member of its Council on Accreditation, a member of its board of directors, and senior director of the organization.

He received his veterinary degree in 1987 from Iowa State University and a master’s degree in laboratory animal medicine from Pennsylvania State University. He has 35 years of experience in academic and pharmaceutical laboratory animal medicine.

Dr. Borkowski is a past president of the American Society of Laboratory Animal Practitioners and the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine. He is currently president-elect of the International Association of Colleges of Laboratory Animal Medicine and serves on the board of directors for the National Association for Biomedical Research.

Prior to joining AAALAC International Dr. Borkowski was senior research advisor for Eli Lilly and Co.
