National Academies of Practice accepts two veterinary fellows

The National Academies of Practice, an interdisciplinary organization of health care practitioners and scholars, held a March 7-9 forum in Atlanta on "Interprofessional Collaborative Practice: Advocacy for Population Health." The NAP accepted the following veterinarians as new fellows of the Veterinary Medicine Academy.

Dr. Michael J. Blackwell (Tuskegee '75) directs the Program for Pet Health Equity at the University of Tennessee College of Social Work and chairs the Access to Veterinary Care Coalition. He previously served as dean of the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine, chief of staff in the Office of the Surgeon General, deputy director of the Food and Drug Administration Center for Veterinary Medicine, chief veterinary officer for the U.S. Public Health Service, and chief veterinary officer for the Humane Society of the United States.

Capt. Hugh Mainzer (Tufts '90) of the U.S. Public Health Service is a senior preventive medicine officer and supervisory epidemiologist assigned to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta. Dr. Mainzer currently works in the CDC Center for Preparedness and Response as a member of the Division of State and Local Readiness. Among other positions, he served as a deputy associate director in the CDC National Center for Environmental Health. He was chief veterinary officer for the USPHS from 2007-11.
