AKC foundation awards grants to study epilepsy, reproductive diseases

AKC Canine Health Foundation logoThe American Kennel Club Canine Health Foundation has awarded four grants to study epilepsy in dogs and two grants to study reproductive diseases in dogs.

The studies are as follows:

  • “Identification of a novel juvenile myoclonic epilepsy gene and its underlying disease mechanism,” Hannes Lohi, PhD, University of Helsinki and the Folkhalsan Institute of Genetics, $82,240.
  • “Identification of genetic risk factors for canine epilepsy,” Dr. Gary Johnson, University of Missouri, $84,121.
  • “Studying the role of the gastrointestinal tract in canine epilepsy,” Dr. Karen Munana, North Carolina State University, $14,995.
  • “Investigating a ketogenic medium-chain triglyceride (MCT) supplement for the treatment of drug-resistant canine idiopathic epilepsy and its behavioral comorbidities,” Dr. Holger Andreas Volk, University of London, $107,697.
  • “Role of E. coli biofilm in canine pyometra,” Dr. Marco A. Coutinho da Silva, The Ohio State University, $14,731.
  • “An epidemiological study of Brucella canis,” Tory V. Whitten and Dr. Joni M. Scheftel, Minnesota Department of Health, $14,986.
