The AVMA supports passage of the FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (S. 510). In addition to giving the Health and Human Services secretary authority to regulate food and order mandatory food recalls, the legislation would bring about a National Agriculture and Food Defense Strategy. Moreover, each food facility would be required to evaluate hazards and implement preventive controls. Foodborne illness surveillance systems would also be beefed up if S. 510 were enacted.
