Floods, hurricanes, and earthquakes can wreak havoc on human and animal populations without proper preparation.

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation sponsors disaster-related training sessions each year to help ready veterinarians and emergency responders for these situations.

Grants from the Foundation make possible conferences and symposiums across the country. They provide information on topics such as providing animal disease response, creating emergency response teams, and evacuating and sheltering pets and livestock. The AVMF sponsored seven sessions in 2009 and five in 2008.

This year the AVMF will award grants to six organizations hosting a state, regional, or national disaster training session. Up to $5,000 is available for each.

No more than one session per year per organization will be sponsored by the AVMF. The deadline to apply has been extended to June 30.

The application is available at www.avmf.org by clicking on the links "What We Fund" and "Disaster Relief." For more information on the application or training sessions, contact Donna Johnson, AVMF finance manager, at (800) 248-2862, Ext. 6686.
