James M. Carter

Dr. Carter (MSU '51), 87, West Lafayette, Ind., died July 6, 2009. Prior to retirement in 1988, he taught physiology and pharmacology at Purdue University. Early in his career, Dr. Carter practiced in Elkhart, Ind., for 10 years. He was a member of the Indiana VMA, American Association of Veterinary Physiologists and Pharmacologists, and Conference of Research Workers in Animal Diseases. Dr. Carter was a veteran of the Army. His wife, Barbara; two daughters; and two sons survive him. Memorials may be made to the St. James Synodical Education Fund, St. James Lutheran Church, 800 Cincinnati St., Lafayette, IN 47901.

Elwood J. Hoffert

Dr. Hoffert (OSU '38), 93, Tiffin, Ohio, died June 13, 2009. He owned a practice in Fremont, Ohio, for more than 44 years, focusing on large animal medicine. Earlier in his career, Dr. Hoffert tested cattle for what was known as the U.S. Bureau of Animal Industry in North Carolina and Michigan, and served as one of the first veterinarians for the Northern Ohio Breeders Association. He was a member of the Ohio VMA. Dr. Hoffert is survived by his wife, Marian; three sons; and two daughters.

Elaine J. Hopkins

Dr. Hopkins (UP '57), 76, Harwich, Mass., died May 20, 2009. Prior to retirement in 1972, she owned a practice in Harwich. Early in her career, Dr. Hopkins practiced mixed animal medicine in Pennsylvania. Memorials may be made to The Humane Society of the United States, 2100 L St. N.W., Washington, DC 20037.

Dean H. Hummels

Dr. Hummels (WSU '80), 59, Camas, Wash., died April 1, 2009. He founded Summit Animal Hospital in Camas in 1996. Earlier in his career, Dr. Hummels practiced at Alpine Veterinary Hospital in Bingen, Wash. His wife, Gretchen, and a daughter survive him. Memorials may be made to Ray Hickey Hospice House, 2112 E. Donald R. Karr

Dr. Karr (MSU '55), 78, Venice, Fla., died April 9, 2009. He practiced at Beech Road Veterinary Hospital in Redford, Mich., for more than 35 years. Earlier in his career, Dr. Karr practiced in Glencoe, Ill., and Waterford, Mich. He was a life member of the Michigan VMA. Dr. Karr's two daughters and two sons survive him. Douglas G. Krous

Dr. Krous (KSU '62), 75, Albuquerque, N.M., died June 5, 2009. He owned Chellwood Animal Clinic, a small animal practice in Albuquerque, from 1971 until retirement in 2005. Dr. Krous was a past president of the Albuquerque Veterinary Association and a past member of the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine. He served in the Navy during the Korean War. Dr. Krous is survived by his son and daughter.

Ernest F. Little

Dr. Little (OSU '44), 90, St. Petersburg, Fla., died June 11, 2009. Prior to retirement in 1983, he owned a practice in Ashland, Ohio. Dr. Little served in the Army Veterinary Corps during the Korean War. His son and daughter survive him.

Robert L. Lyle

Dr. Lyle (MO '51), 85, Bolivar, Mo., died Feb. 21, 2009. He retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture as a veterinary medical officer in 1986. Earlier in his career, Dr. Lyle practiced large animal medicine in Appleton City, Mo., for several years. He raised, trained, and showed Missouri Fox Trotting Horses.

Dr. Lyle served in the Army during World War II. He was a member of the Bolivar Saddle Club, Missouri Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association, and Mid-America Fox Trotting Horse Breed Association. Dr. Lyle is survived by his wife, Margie; three daughters; and a son. Memorials in his name may be made to St. John's Hospice Care, 1378 E. Debra S. McVey

Dr. McVey (OSU '82), 51, Lovettsville, Va., died June 17, 2009. She was the founder of Countryside Animal Clinic, a small animal practice in Sterling, Va. Dr. McVey is survived by her husband, Dr. Kenneth G. Wright (OSU '79), who practices at Countryside Animal Clinic, and two sons. Thomas D. O'Brien Jr.

Dr. O'Brien (MO '51), 84, Edina, Mo., died June 13, 2009. During his career, he operated the Edina Feed and Livestock Store. Dr. O'Brien was an Army veteran of World War II, earning a Purple Heart. His wife, Madelyn; three daughters; and two sons survive him. Memorials may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church Restoration Project, 509 N. Main, Edina, MO 63537.

Clarence D. Parks

Dr. Parks (UP '33), 97, Varden, Pa., died Jan. 21, 2009. Prior to retirement in 1985, he served as a medical inspector for dairy herds in the state. Dr. Parks began his career as an equine practitioner in Wayne County. In the late 1930s, he changed his focus to dairy practice. An advocate for Morgan horses, Dr. Parks promoted the preservation of its bloodlines through public service and education.

Paul G. Rothaug III

Dr. Rothaug (ISU '89), 45, West Jefferson, Ohio, died April 3, 2009. An equine practitioner, he practiced at Woodland Run Equine Veterinary Facility in Grove City, Ohio. Earlier in his career, Dr. Rothaug practiced at Cokesbury Equine Clinic in Georgetown, Del., and Toronto Equine Hospital in Mississauga, Canada. He was a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons and a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners and Ohio VMA.

Robert R. Selcer

Dr. Selcer (TEX '71), 60, Louisville, Tenn., died June 13, 2009. From 1977 until retirement in 2003, he served as an associate professor of neurology in the Small Animal Department at the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine. Earlier in his career, Dr. Selcer served on the faculty of the University of California-Davis. He was a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Dr. Selcer is survived by his wife, Peggy; a son; and a daughter.

Orville O. Westlake

Dr. Westlake (IL '62), 85, Tovey, Ill., died March 20, 2009. He retired in 1985 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture after serving 22 years as a meat inspector in Illinois at East St. Louis and Springfield, and in Atlanta. Dr. Westlake was an infantryman during World War II, earning a Purple Heart and Bronze Star. His wife, Kathryn, and a daughter survive him.

Thomas D. Wills Jr.

Dr. Wills (MO '50), 89, Jackson, Mo., died May 10, 2009. Before retiring in 1980, he worked in animal health for the state of Missouri. Prior to that, Dr. Wills worked for the federal government in the same capacity. Early in his career, he practiced in Missouri at Daisy, Oak Ridge, Cape Girardeau, and Jackson. In retirement, Dr. Wills served as veterinarian for the Fruitland Livestock Auction for four years.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps. Dr. Wills is survived by two sons and a daughter. Memorials may be made to Shriners Hospital, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607; or Teen Challenge Mid America, P.O. Box 1089, Cape Girardeau, MO 63702.
