The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently announced that Dr. Casey Barton Behravesh (TEX '05) and Dr. Stacy Holzbauer (ISU '02) were recipients of the 2009 James H. Steele Veterinary Public Health Award for excellence in veterinary public health.

The award is named for the veterinarian who became the first chief of the Veterinary Public Health Division at the CDC in 1947. It is given annually to Epidemic Intelligence Service officers who have "demonstrated outstanding contributions to veterinary public health," according to the CDC.

Dr. Barton Behravesh, a veterinary epidemiologist with the CDC OutbreakNet Team and a lieutenant commander with the U.S. Public Health Service, was honored for her work in the Enteric Diseases and Epidemiology Branch at CDC, where she was a leader in investigating a multistate Salmonella outbreak involving dry dog food, which had not been associated with any previous disease outbreaks.

Dr. Holzbauer, a CDC career epidemiology field officer and lieutenant commander with the U.S. Public Health Service, was honored for her work in the Minnesota Department of Health, where she was the lead investigator during a multi-state outbreak of unexplained neurologic illness associated with pig slaughterhouse workers who used compressed air to extract brains from the swine carcasses.
