Awards: Nathan R. Brewer Lifetime Achievement Award—Dr. Gerald L. Van Hoosier, Edmonds, Wash., won this award for distinguished and outstanding service to laboratory animal medicine and to the ACLAM. A 1957 graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Hoosier is professor emeritus of comparative medicine at the University of Washington. He helped establish the university's Department of Comparative Medicine and served as professor and chair of the department from 1975-1995. During his career, Dr. Van Hoosier also served as an adjunct professor of veterinary pathology at Washington State University, was a member of the United States Public Health Service, and served on the faculty of Baylor University College of Medicine. He is a past president of ACLAM and the American Association for Laboratory Animal Science. Comparative Medicine Scientist Award—Dr. M. Michael Swindle, Charleston, S.C. A 1969 graduate of Texas A&M University, Dr. Swindle is professor and chair of the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina. He was honored for scientific accomplishments over a more than 20-year period. Mentor Award—Dr. Alvin F. Moreland, Gainesville, Fla., was the first recipient of this award, given for years of service in assisting young veterinarians in laboratory animal medicine. A 1960 graduate of the University of Georgia, Dr. Moreland is professor emeritus in the Department of Comparative Medicine at the University of Florida. He mentored 32 veterinarians while serving almost 30 years as director of the residency program in laboratory animal medicine. Foster Award—Drs. Jeremy Smedley, Rockville, Md., and Robert E. Rose, North Richland Hills, Texas, were honored for academic excellence in the certifying examination held in 2007. Drs. Paul Flecknell, Newcastle, United Kingdom, and Art Hall, Canby, Ore., were awarded honorary diplomate status. Dr. Flecknell is professor of laboratory animal science at the University of Newcastle upon Tyne. Dr. Hall is retired professor and director of the Department of Comparative Medicine at the Oregon Health and Sciences University.
