August F. Burger
Dr. Burger (ISU ’52), 81, Troutman, N.C., died April 2, 2007. Prior to retirement in 1987, he practiced in Alta, Iowa, for 35 years. Dr. Burger served as a medic in the Army during World War II in the European, African, and Middle Eastern theatres. He received two Bronze Battle stars and the Combat Medic Badge. Active in civic life, Dr. Burger served on Alta’s city council, school board, and volunteer fire department. His two sons and two daughters survive him.
Elizabeth A. Cochran
Dr. Cochran (OKL ’73), 67, Keithville, La., died Sept. 10, 2007. She established Alvarado Veterinary Clinic in Fallbrook, Calif., where she practiced from 1980 until retirement in 1997. Michael D. Cross
Dr. Cross (MSU ’95), 39, Flint, Mich., died Sept. 29, 2007. He owned Cross Veterinary Clinic in Grand Blanc, Mich. A certified veterinary practice manager, Dr. Cross also owned Michael Cross Consultants and served as associate dean of the veterinary technology program at Baker College in Flint.
He was a member of the Michigan and Saginaw Valley VMAs and served on the board of directors of the Humane Society of Genesee County. Dr. Cross was also a member of the Flint Board of Education. His wife, Kimberly, and two daughters survive him. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Genesee County, 3325 S. Dort Hwy, Burton, MI 48509.
Leroy E. Hanson
Dr. Hanson (MSU ’50), 88, Odessa, Mo., died Oct. 8, 2007. Prior to retirement in 2002, he practiced in Odessa for 52 years. Dr. Hanson was a lifetime member of the Missouri VMA. His son and daughter survive him.
Woodrow W. Jackson
Dr. Jackson (OSU ’40), 90, La Canada, Calif., died April 6, 2007. He founded Jackson Pet Hospital in Verdugo City, Calif., in 1948, practicing there until retirement in 1978. Dr. Jackson was a member of the Southern California VMA. He served in the Army Medical Corps from 1942-1946. Dr. Jackson was a past president of the Crescenta-Canada Rotary Club. His wife, Lorraine, and four children survive him.
Robert B. Mericle
Dr. Mericle (ISU ’29), 99, West Des Moines, Iowa, died Oct. 9, 2007. He worked for the Department of Agriculture in poultry inspection beginning in 1929, retiring as district supervisor in 1971. During his career with the USDA, Dr. Mericle established inspection and certification of ready-to-cook poultry for retail consumer sales and administered the Poultry Products Inspection Act.
In 1965, he received a presidential citation for efficiency and promoting economy in government from President Lyndon B. Johnson. Dr. Mericle was one of three charter recipients of the Stange Award for meritorious service in veterinary medicine from Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1970. Richard A. Shea
Dr. Shea (KSU ’42), 87, Vista, Calif., died April 12, 2007.
Edward K. Wojciechowski
Dr. Wojciechowski (UP ’56), 79, Lake Suzy, Fla., died Aug. 29, 2007. A past president of the Rhode Island VMA, he owned Greenville Animal Hospital in Greenville, R.I., for 30 years prior to retirement. Dr. Wojciechowski served in the Coast Guard and was a member of the American Legion. He is survived by his wife, Bette; five daughters; and a son.
