Another resource has been added to the AVMA State Legislative Resources Web site. A new chart depicting the various exemptions to state practice acts and regulations is featured in the Issues section of the State Advocacy Web page at www.avma.org/advocacy/state/issues/sr_cavm_exemptions.asp. The chart summarizes exemptions across nine areas: chiropractic, physical therapy, acupuncture, psychology, artificial insemination, dentistry, farriery, homeopathic medicine, and livestock management practices.

While the chart provides a snapshot of the most recent status of practice act exemptions in the states, it is only a general summary. For a comprehensive analysis of the scope of practice in each state, veterinarians should review the text of each state's practice act and regulations. A local attorney knowledgeable in this field may be of assistance in this review. As laws and regulations are amended, the AVMA State Legislative and Regulatory Affairs Department in the AVMA Communications Division expects to revise the material periodically.
