PetSmart Charities has awarded $2.3 million in grants to help disaster relief agencies and animal welfare organizations address the needs of pets abandoned, hurt, or lost during hurricanes and other natural disasters.

PetSmart Charities, based in Phoenix, is a national nonprofit organization supported by PetSmart Inc., which also operates the pet retail store PetSmart.

The charity awarded $1.3 million to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals to help develop a large-scale, spay-and-neuter project in Louisiana and Mississippi.

The State Animal Response Teams were presented with $540,000 from the charity, marking the largest grant the teams have received. The multiyear grant will help fund the development of 25 new SART-certified states through 2010.

Also, $500,000 will go toward the establishment of a regional emergency supply trailer program. Tractor-trailer rigs will be fully stocked with emergency pet supplies and strategically stationed at six U.S. PetSmart distribution centers. The trailers will be deployed to areas affected by natural disasters such as hurricanes and fires as well as other large-scale pet emergencies.
