Elsa Murano, PhD, the U.S. undersecretary of agriculture for food safety, has resigned her post to become the vice chancellor and dean of agriculture and life sciences at Texas A&M University. She also will serve as director of the Texas Agricultural Experiment Station.

Dr. Murano was appointed by President Bush in 2001 to direct the USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service. Prior to her appointment, she was a professor in the Department of Animal Science at Texas A&M and the Sadie Hatfield professor in agriculture. She served as director of the Texas A&M Institute for Food Science and Engineering—Center for Food Safety from 1997 until her appointment.

At press time, Dr. Murano's USDA position was open, pending the appointment of a new undersecretary by President Bush.
