AVMA division director promoted to associate executive vice president

In his new role, Dr. Wise will continue to provide staff support to the Strategic Planning Committee and will take on duties as director of the Executive Division and staff support to the Credentialing Committee. He will become increasingly involved with developing integrated business processes and operational procedures across all nine divisions that make up the AVMA. "I am looking forward with enthusiasm to continuing to work with AVMA management and leadership to enhance organizational strategic planning," Dr. Wise said. "AVMA continues to build ways to engage its leaders, members, and staff in a dynamic process to effectively prioritize and tackle important professional issues. My new role will enable me to work more closely with all divisions to strengthen our organizational operations, with a focus on effective and efficient membership service and communications." Dr. Wise first came to the AVMA serving as staff economist for nine years, managing numerous studies and special projects, including the AVMA Biennial Economic Survey and U.S. Household Pet Ownership and Demographics Survey, and authoring more than a hundred reports in the JAVMA. After spending five years as an industry research consultant, he rejoined the AVMA as director of the Center for Information Management in 1990. There, he led the AVMA's growing information management programs, including the development of its Web site, and its related business functions and services. In 1999, Dr. Wise was promoted to director of the AVMA Membership and Field Services Division. While he was director, the division enhanced membership records administration to better member services, streamlined annual dues processing, established the new online Veterinary Career Center, and strengthened student chapter relations and support for the Student AVMA. "Probably most important of the division's successes is the development by the staff of a mission-oriented work ethic to always serve members and customers with professionalism and pride," Dr. Wise said. In the position of associate executive vice president, Dr. Wise succeeds Dr. Janet D. Donlin, who has been serving the AVMA as interim assistant executive vice president since the retirement of Dr. Arthur V. Tennyson on April 30. In June, the Executive Board elected Dr. Donlin as assistant executive vice president, and she assumed that position July 24 at the end of the 2004 House of Delegates session in Philadelphia. On June 30, J. Karl Wise, PhD, CAE, assumed the position of associate executive vice president of the AVMA. Dr. Wise has been the director of the AVMA Membership and Field Services Division since 1999.
