AVMF awards $125,000 in support of animal health, human-animal bond research

The American Veterinary Medical Foundation has awarded three research grants totaling $125,000 for the following initiatives:

  • $75,000 to Melinda Wilkerson, DVM, PhD, Kansas State University, for "Evaluation of vaccines and vaccine schedules with the potential risks of adverse reactions and immune-mediated diseases." The research is a multicenter approach that will assess the associations of vaccine frequency and vaccine products with risks of adverse reactions and development of immune-mediated disease.
  • $25,000 to Lana Kaiser, MD, DVM, Michigan State University, to investigate the effects of a therapeutic riding program on the adjustment of at-risk children.
  • $25,000 to Lana Kaiser, MD, DVM, to study the role pets play in decreasing stress and increasing coping skills in parents of children with type I diabetes.
