In Memoriam

Dr. Allen (AUB '57), 74, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., died May 26, 2002. He practiced large animal medicine in south Florida for 45 years. Dr. Allen also served as track veterinarian at the area's major Thoroughbred racetracks for the past 14 years. He was an Army photographer in the Pacific following World War II and later, an avid amateur photographer.

Dr. Avery (TEX '64), 65, Calhoun, La., died May 4, 2002. A large animal practitioner, he owned the Avery Equine Clinic in Calhoun. Earlier in his career, Dr. Avery had practiced in Gaars Mill and Newelton in Louisiana.

Known for his work in embryo transplantation, he also bred horses. Dr. Avery was a past president of the Louisiana VMA. An Air Force Security Service veteran, he attained the rank of staff sergeant. Dr. Cadden (CAL '69), 63, San Mateo, Calif., died March 27, 2002. From 1976 until his death, he owned Laurelwood Veterinary Clinic in San Mateo. Following graduation, Dr. Cadden worked for the San Francisco SPCA for seven years.

Dr. Fenyes, 76, Evanston, Ill., died April 15, 2002. She was a 1950 graduate of Justus Liebig University in Giessen, Germany. Retired, she had owned a small animal practice.

Dr. Jackson (SKW '74), 52, Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, died May 12, 2002. A small animal surgeon, he established the Granville Island Veterinary Hospital in Vancouver in 1981. Prior to that, Dr. Jackson worked as an assistant professor of surgery at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. He was a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons.

Dr. Jordan (PHI '82), 48, La Habra, Calif., died Jan. 26, 2002. He worked for the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service in Brawley, Calif. A member of the National Association of Federal Veterinarians, Dr. Jordan had once served as its representative in California.

Dr. Pearson (ISU '56), 69, Ames, Iowa, died May 8, 2002. Retired since 1996, he was professor emeritus and past dean of Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. During his 38-year career at the college, Dr. Pearson served as associate professor and professor in the Department of Veterinary Medicine and Surgery, and orthopedic surgeon and director of the small animal clinic. He was named dean in 1972, working in this capacity for 17 years. Dr. Pearson also served as professor of veterinary medicine and surgery and associate director of clinics at the University of Missouri, from 1964-1965.

A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Surgeons, he was a past president and a past chairman of the board. Dr. Pearson had also chaired the Council of Deans of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges. He was a member of the American Association of Veterinary Clinicians. Dr. Pearson received the Riser Small Animal Award, the Gaines Award and Medal, the Norden Distinguished Teaching Award, the Outstanding Teacher Award from Iowa State University, and the Iowa Veterinarian-of-the-Year Award in 1989. He was the recipient of the National Academies of Practice Award of Merit.

Dr. Rooney (MIN '69), 60, Daytona Beach, Fla., died May 4, 2002. A small animal practitioner, he was associated with Rawls' Veterinary Hospital in Daytona Beach. Earlier in his career, Dr. Rooney practiced in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for many years. He had also worked as a nursing education lecturer.

Dr. Rooney was a Naval corpsman. His wife, Elana; two daughters; and a son survive him.

Dr. Sautter (OSU '44), 89, St. Paul, Minn., died April 20, 2002. He was a professor emeritus at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine. From 1983-1989, Dr. Sautter served on the faculty of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, West Indies. Following graduation, he joined the faculty of the University of Minnesota, working first as a research fellow and then as an instructor. In 1954, Dr. Sautter was appointed professor and head of the Department of Veterinary Pathology and Parasitology, serving in this capacity for 12 years. He retired from the University of Minnesota in 1983.

Dr. Sautter was a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. He served as a consultant for the U.S. Agency for International Development and the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization in several countries. He was a member of the Minnesota VMA, the Council of Research Workers in Animal Diseases, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the U. S. Livestock Sanitary Association.

His wife, Margaret; a son; and a daughter survive him. Dr. Sautter's son, Dr. Thomas H. Sautter (MIN '78), and daughter-in-law, Dr. Linda Sifford (MIN '77), are veterinarians in Minnesota. Dr. Stefanick (UP '43), 81, Hermitage, Pa., died April 18, 2002. Prior to retirement in 1990, he was in mixed practice in Sharon, Pa., and Hermitage for 48 years. Dr. Stefanick had served on the Pennsylvania Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners and was a past president of the Northwestern Pennsylvania VMA. He had also served as a trustee to the Pennsylvania VMA.

Actively involved in the Rotary Club, Dr. Stefanick was district governor of the club in 1967, a former Rotary District Youth Exchange officer, and chairman of the USA Rotary Tour for 25 years. In 1974, the Pennsylvania VMA honored him with the Award of Merit, for his active participation in the Youth Exchange program.

A World War II veteran, Dr. Stefanick served in the Air Force as a bombardier and navigator of B-29 bombers. He attained the rank of 2nd lieutenant. Dr. Stefanick is survived by his wife, Doris; four sons; and three daughters. One son, Dr. Larry L. Stefanick (UP '78), is a veterinarian in Sharon.
