The USDA-FSIS announced in August that Dr. Patrick C. McCaskey has been named new assistant deputy administrator for operations within the agency's Office of Public Health and Science.

A recent director of FSIS' Eastern Laboratory in Athens, Ga, Dr. McCaskey is now responsible for overseeing three FSIS laboratories. He will continue to focus on laboratory quality as he leads the agency's efforts to have all FSIS laboratories obtain ISO Standard 17025 accreditation (the latest standard of laboratory quality as written by the International Organization for Standardization) by December 2001.

Dr. McCaskey has worked for the USDA for nearly 24 years. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists, he was a veterinary pathologist in the Eastern Laboratory for five years before serving as chief of the pathology branch. From 1990-1994 he served as director of the FSIS pathology and serology division in Beltsville, Md.
