In Memoriam

Dr. Bohlender (COL '65), 59, Longmont, Colo, died April 30, 2000. He was the Colorado state veterinarian for the past six years after having served as assistant state veterinarian for seven years. Prior to that, Dr. Bohlender owned a mixed practice in Denver. A past president of the American Humane Association Western region, Dr. Bohlender was also a member of the Colorado VMA, the US Animal Health Association, and the Livestock Conservation Institute. His brother, Dr. Robert Bohlender (COL '58), has a large animal practice in North Platte, Neb. Dr. Kimble (GA '64), 60, Arlington, Va, died June 2, 2000. He owned Arlington Animal Hospital, a small animal practice. Dr. Kimble was a member of the Virginia VMA and DC Academy of Veterinary Medicine. He began his career in 1964, working with the Army Veterinary Corps, where he attained the rank of captain. Dr. Russell (KSU '51), 78, Independence, Mo, died June 21, 2000. A poultry industry veterinarian, he worked at the I. D. Russell Company for 48 years and retired as chairman of the board. Dr. Russell was a member of the American Association of Avian Pathologists and the National Turkey Federation. During World War II, he served in the Army Veterinary Corps on the island of Tinian. Dr. Schwartz (OKL '53), 74, Okemos, Mich, died March 17, 2000. He had a mixed practice in Garber, Okla, before becoming a ranch veterinarian in Hartsel, Colo. In 1956 Dr. Schwartz was a field veterinarian and area livestock inspector with the USDA-APHIS in Garden City, Kan. In 1959 he was acting poultry inspector-in-charge for the USDA-FSIS at a turkey plant in Faribault, Minn. In the early 1960s Dr. Schwartz taught diseases of poultry and was poultry clinical and diagnostic pathologist at the University of Georgia. In 1964 he joined the faculty of Veterinary Science and Extension at Pennsylvania State University. Dr. Schwartz became a faculty member at Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1984 and retired in 1993. In recent years, he was an avian health consultant with Avicon Inc.

Dr. Schwartz was named Veterinarian of the Year by the Pennsylvania VMA in 1984 and was named Extension Veterinarian of the Year by the American Association of Extension Veterinarians in 1986. He received the Poultry Industry Leader Award from the Michigan Allied Poultry Industry in 1991 and was the author of the Poultry Health Handbook and Grower's Reference on Gamebird Health. Dr. Schwartz was honored by the American Association of Avian Pathologists with the Bottorff Award in 1993. He spent 30 months with the 2nd Marine Division during World War II. Dr. Van Pelt (WSU '56), 70, Fairbanks, Alaska, died June 3, 2000. He established his practice in Fairbanks in 1973, and had also practiced in Oregon. He had also been a researcher and professor at Michigan State University and the University of Alaska-Fairbanks. Dr. Van Pelt dedicated much of his time to forensic medicine and worked toward discovering the causes of animal abuse. Well known in the Alaskan mushing community, he was often called on for his knowledge and understanding of sled dogs.
