Congratulations to AVMA member Dr. Jose Peralta, one of six veterinarians worldwide to receive 2019 Global Welfare Awards from the World Veterinary Association (WVA).

The awards recognize veterinarians who have made an impact in promoting animal welfare. Winners were selected from each of the WVA’s six regions and announced in April during the World Veterinary Congress in Costa Rica.

Dr. Peralta, an internationally recognized author and speaker on animal welfare and animal welfare education, also received the AVMA Animal Welfare Award in 2015. He has served on the AVMA's Model Animal Welfare Curriculum Planning Group and on an AVMA working group charged with developing strategies for ongoing animal welfare dialogue within the profession.

A 1988 veterinary graduate of the University of Zaragoza in Spain, he is a professor of animal welfare at Western University of Health Sciences College of Veterinary Medicine and has presented at and contributed to numerous seminars around the world.

Recently Dr. Peralta has been involved in a project looking at the field of welfare and human-animal interaction with therapy dogs and children, in collaboration with a child psychologist.
