QPR suicide prevention training

Learn how to save a life

QPR suicide prevention training, also known as gatekeeper training, teaches people without professional mental health backgrounds to recognize the signs that someone may be considering suicide, establish a dialogue, and guide the person to seek professional help. It can be a critical tool to save lives—and it's something that all veterinary professionals can learn to do.

AVMA is proud to offer free suicide prevention training to all members of the veterinary community.

What you’ll learn

QPR stands for question, persuade, and refer—the three steps anyone can learn to help prevent suicide. The training teaches participants how to help colleagues and others who may be in crisis. You’ll learn:

  • How to question, persuade and refer someone who may be suicidal
  • How to get help for someone in crisis
  • Common causes of suicidal behavior
  • Warning signs of suicide

Training is conducted entirely online and takes only about 60 minutes.

Start now: Create your free account

To get started, you’ll need to set up an account with QPR Institute. Enter the organization code AVMA-OPEN to create your account. You’ll have access to the free training for up to three years, so you can review the materials as often as you want—compliments of AVMA, AVMA LIFE and AVMA PLIT.
