The Nevada VMA awarded its first Jim Nave Leadership Award to Dr. Aron Neeman, Feb. 12 during the association's annual meeting, held in conjunction with the Western Veterinary Conference.

Named for Nevada resident and AVMA immediate past president, Dr. James E. Nave, the award's purpose is twofold: involving recent graduates in organized veterinary medicine, while also honoring its namesake for promoting participation in veterinary leadership.

Award recipients will be Nevada residents who will represent the state as a recent graduate at the AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference. They are invited to attend the annual state association meeting each February, and their way will be paid to the AVMA Annual Convention. The goal is for recipients to see how the AVMA House of Delegates works and what the AVMA does for them.

"It gets them involved and gives them a taste of what is going on in their profession, at the state level and nationally," said Michelle Wagner, Nevada VMA executive director, about the award. Hopefully, other state veterinary associations will be inspired to offer similar awards, she added.

Dr. Neeman received his DVM degree from Oklahoma State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1999 and is a small animal practitioner in Las Vegas. He represented Nevada as recent graduate at the 2001 AVMA Veterinary Leadership Conference.

The Jim Nave Leadership Award will be presented annually and is likely to be endowed.
