The National Alliance of State Animal and Agricultural Emergency Programs presented the NASAAEP Service Award to Drs. Arnold L. Goldman and Warren Hess during the alliance’s 2017 summit, Dec. 5-7 in Gulfport, Mississippi. The award recognizes service to the alliance and contributions to furthering local, state, and federal capabilities for responding to the needs of animals during emergencies.

Dr. Goldman (Florida ’86) was the first NASAAEP president, serving from 2008-2010. A small animal practitioner in Connecticut, he is founder and president of the Connecticut Veterinary Medical Foundation and created its Connecticut State Animal Response Team. He has served on working groups on animal emergency response with the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Department of Agriculture and on a regional planning team. He is treasurer of the AVMA.

Dr. Hess (Colorado State ’89) was the second NASAAEP president, serving from 2010-2012. While he was with the Utah state veterinarian’s office, he was a founder and president of the Utah Emergency Animal Response Coalition and developed a training program in large animal rescue. He is an assistant director of the AVMA Division of Animal and Public Health, with responsibilities including disaster preparedness and supporting the AVMA Committee on Disaster and Emergency Issues.
