Solomon is new FDA CVM director

Dr. Steven Solomon became the new director of the Food and Drug Administration’s Center for Veterinary Medicine earlier this year. In January, he took over for Tracey Forfa, who had served as the agency’s acting director for several months following Dr. Bernadette Dunham’s departure from the CVM last year.

Dr. Solomon is a 1980 graduate of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine and holds a master’s in public health from Johns Hopkins University.

He practiced large animal medicine for 10 years prior to joining the FDA in 1990 as a veterinary medical officer. By 2013, he had risen to become the FDA’s deputy associate commissioner for regulatory affairs.

Dr. Solomon has particular expertise in the many policy and scientific issues relevant to veterinary medicine, the FDA said in an announcement about his selection this past December. “His experience at the Office of Regulatory Affairs gives him a great understanding of the regulatory landscape and CVM’s portfolio of activities and priorities, making him an ideal choice to lead the center in the coming years.”
