State organizations looking to enhance their disaster preparedness and response efforts are encouraged to apply for grants from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation. Applications are due by Aug. 29, 2008.

The AVMF offers startup grants and matching/challenge grants through its Animal Disaster Relief and Response Fund. Startup grants of up to $5,000 are available to qualified state VMAs and 501(c)(3) or 501(c)(6) organizations in the early stages of disaster preparedness and response planning.

Matching/challenge grants of up to $20,000 are available to those who are further along in the disaster preparedness and response process. Matching/challenge grants can be used for expenses related to state training and training-related activities, medical supplies, and disaster response-related equipment.

In 2008, the AVMF awarded state grants to 18 organizations (see JAVMA, Jan. 1, 2008). Seven organizations earned startup grants, and 11 were presented with matching/challenge grants. A total of $254,971.25 was awarded overall.
