The Executive Board approved revisions to the Guidelines on Judicious Therapeutic use of Antimicrobials in Poultry, as recommended by the Steering Committee on Antimicrobial Resistance. The guidelines were developed by the American Association of Avian Pathologists and originally approved by the Executive Board in 2000.
The changes reflect the voluntary withdrawal of sarafloxacin from the market, and the addition of another noninfectious cause of the subacute serositis form of colibacillosis. To be consistent with the AVMA General Judicious Use Principles, the term "antibiotic" resistance was changed to "antimicrobial" resistance in the glossary.
The revised guidelines are available online at www.avma.org/scienact/jtua/poultry/poultry00.asp.
