Zoonotic diseases and pets
Diseases that can be transmitted between animals and humans are called zoonotic (pronounced "zoe-oh-NOT-ick"). Some zoonotic diseases, like rabies, are deadly. Many others are not—but can still make you sick. The organisms that cause zoonotic diseases include certain bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites.
Although pets can be a source of illness for people, the risk of this happening generally is low, especially compared with the many benefits these animals can bring to our lives. To minimize any risk, it pays to know which situations can increase your chance of catching disease from pets, which diseases they can carry, and which preventive practices can help protect you both.
