AVMA policies
Policies are the guiding principles of the AVMA. The Association has three categories of policy. AVMA professional policies provide guidance on the practice of veterinary medicine. Endorsed policies are policies adopted by other groups and supported by the AVMA. Administrative policies are primarily internal and direct the operation of the Association.
The AVMA encourages veterinarians to voluntarily adhere to policies impacting the practice of veterinary medicine. These policies are developed by peers on behalf of the profession. AVMA policies are not, and do not supersede, law or regulation. The AVMA Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics are unique in that violation of these may result in disciplinary action by the AVMA.
All AVMA professional policies are open for comment by AVMA members year-round. Commenting opportunities are available on each policy page. Policies undergo formal AVMA review on a regular basis, so your comments are particularly timely and valuable on policies when they are under review.
