Shipment of diagnostic specimens

It is imperative for the professional practice of veterinarians that animal tissues, carcasses, and other specimens for diagnostic purposes be able to be shipped by common carrier.

Veterinarians are urged to routinely review and update protocols for preparing diagnostic specimens with support staff, and in consultation with their diagnostic laboratories, to ensure adherence to all applicable guidelines and compliance with federal and state laws.

Proper packaging, labeling, and documentation of specimens in a prescribed manner will facilitate accurate and timely diagnostics, ensure continued service by common carriers, and minimize any adverse public health concerns.
