Clinical guidelines for antimicrobial use in veterinary practice
The AVMA supports the development, dissemination, and promotion of clinical guidelines as a resource to improve antimicrobial stewardship in veterinary practice. Guidelines, when available, should not be construed as dictating an exclusive course of treatment or procedure, because factors unique to the patient, client, setting, or veterinary practice might inform clinical judgment. Veterinarians should recognize that there might be variability in the availability and recommended use of certain antimicrobial drugs among countries. In addition, new guidelines might be developed and existing recommendations might change as evidence becomes available. Guidelines should be reviewed by the issuing body at least every five years and updated as necessary. The AVMA advises veterinarians to review and consider relevant guidelines when making decisions about antimicrobial use and stewardship.
