FDA outreach to veterinarians and pharmacies

Veterinarians have the duty to utilize a compounded drug only when there is no approved animal drug or human drug that can adequately treat the condition, when either used as labeled or in an extralabel manner in its available dosage form and concentration. When there is an FDA-approved product available for adequate medical treatment, the active ingredient should not be compounded from a bulk substance.
