Transmissible Spongiform Encephalopathies

Transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs) are important diseases of animals and humans worldwide. The AVMA encourages dissemination of scientific knowledge of the etiology, epidemiology, prevention, and control of TSEs, as well as educational materials for the general public.  The AVMA strongly supports and encourages national and state surveillance, monitoring, and control programs for both wild and domesticated animals.  This includes allocation of resources for best managing remaining reservoir and emerging populations.  The AVMA encourages the USDA and US Department of Health and Human Services to support research for the development of new rapid diagnostic tests, control measures, cleaning and disinfecting procedures, and investigation of the zoonotic potential of TSEs.
