Honoring the volunteer members of the American Veterinary Medical Association's Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams

VMAT
Dozens of American Veterinary Medical Association Veterinary Medical Assistance Team members were recognized at the AVMA Annual Convention Sunday as part of the VMAT's 20th Anniversary celebration.

There are few people as heroic and as selfless as the volunteer members of the American Veterinary Medical Association's Veterinary Medical Assistance Teams (VMAT). They are taking the Veterinarian's Oath to a new level.

In celebration of the VMAT's 20th anniversary, the AVMA and the American Veterinary Medical Foundation, the primary funder of VMAT emergency assistance and disaster response efforts, honored VMAT members Sunday at the AVMA's Annual Convention in Chicago,

The AVMA VMAT teams have assisted both people and animals during some of our darkest days as a nation. They were there in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, supporting the efforts of local veterinary responders by providing medical care for search-and-rescue dogs that were used to scour the rubble for survivors. They were there during Gulf Coast hurricanes Katrina and Rita. And they were there in the aftermath of Superstorm Sandy.

Today, the AVMA's VMAT volunteers fan out across the country whenever and wherever they are needed – as responders, trainers and teachers.

The AVMA salutes each and every VMAT member – past and present – for protecting animal health and welfare in all conditions, without condition.
