Dr. Michael Q. Bailey, AVMA president, said of the awards program, "Every day, across every aspect of veterinary medicine, our colleagues are doing extraordinary work that deserves to be recognized. And sometimes, it is the little things that result in a big impact. Whether through advancing animal health, public service, scientific research, education, or the human-animal bond, the AVMA Excellence Awards celebrate individuals whose impact and dedication have truly made a difference in veterinary medicine. I encourage all AVMA members to reflect on those who have made exceptional contributions to our profession, and to take the time to nominate them for this well-deserved recognition."

A version of this story appears in the December 2025 print issue of JAVMA.

Nominations open for Unsung Heroes

The AVMA's Unsung Heroes awards program annually shines a light on foundational veterinary team members whose hard work and dedication often go unnoticed.

Nominations for the 2026 Unsung Heroes awards are now open. The AVMA will choose up to 10 winners, who will each receive an Unsung Hero Award plaque. One grand-prize winner will be named the National Unsung Hero and will receive complimentary registration to attend AVMA Convention 2026, taking place July 10-14, 2026, plus two roundtrip tickets to the event and a two-night stay in Anaheim, California.

An unsung hero can be anyone in a veterinary position who is not a veterinarian. These professionals demonstrate exceptional qualities and are driven by a genuine desire to make a difference.

Nominations can be submitted online and are due January 28. Nominators do not need to be an AVMA member
