Obesity has increased dramatically in the United States during the past 20 years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. While the CDC data describe the human population, other studies indicate that a substantial proportion of American pets also have become obese.
The DNA of a 4-year-old female Abyssinian cat named Cinnamon has been sequenced, according to a report by Joan U. Pontius, PhD, et al, in the November 2007 issue of Genome Research, which details the first assembly, annotation, and comparative analysis of the domestic cat genome.
A number of veterinarians were affected by the wildfires that spread through Southern California in October. The American Veterinary Medical Foundation continues to offer grants of up to $2,000 each to veterinarians who suffered losses or who incurred costs by offering medical services to animal victims.
