John R. Athey

Dr. Athey (Auburn '71), 69, Flagler Beach, Florida, died Dec. 22, 2016. He owned a small animal practice in central Florida for more than 40 years. Dr. Athey also provided veterinary services at the Central Florida Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Sanford for several years.

His wife, Denise Manzolillo; two sons; and a grandchild survive him. Dr. Athey's brother, Dr. Charles W. Athey (Auburn '76), is a small animal veterinarian in Jacksonville, Florida. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, OK 73123.

Clarence R. Cole

Dr. Cole (Ohio State '43), 98, Columbus, Ohio, died April 11, 2017. He was Regents Professor of Veterinary Pathobiology emeritus and a past dean of The Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Following graduation, Dr. Cole joined the faculty of the OSU veterinary college's Department of Veterinary Pathology. He subsequently earned his master's in veterinary pathology (1944) and a doctorate in pathobiology (1947) from the university and went on to serve as a professor of veterinary pathology, chair of the Department of Veterinary Pathology, assistant dean of research development, and professor of comparative pathobiology at the university's School of Medicine.

Dr. Cole was dean of the veterinary college from 1967-71. He then served as Regents Professor of Veterinary Pathobiology until his retirement in 1985. During his tenure, Dr. Cole helped raise funds for and played an important role in the design of the college's Veterinary Medical Center and Goss Laboratory. He made important contributions to research and advocated for a strong curriculum that emphasized teaching.

Dr. Cole was a consultant in pathology for the Walter Reed Army Medical Center and served on the American Board of Veterinary Specialties and the executive council of the International Academy of Pathology. He also served on several councils and committees of the National Academy of Sciences, National Institutes of Health, North Atlantic Treaty Organization, American Cancer Society, and Morris Animal Foundation. Dr. Cole was a past president of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and a past secretary-treasurer and director of the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges.

He is survived by two daughters, a son, six grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. Dr. Cole's late brother, Dr. Forrest Cole (OSU '52), was a veterinarian in Colorado. His nephew, Dr. Thomas E. Cole (OSU '75), practices in Houghton, Michigan. Bill L. Deyoe

Dr. Deyoe (Kansas State '61), 82, Nevada, Iowa, died Jan. 1, 2017. Prior to retirement, he worked as a research veterinarian with the Department of Agriculture at the Agricultural Research Service's National Animal Disease Center in Ames, Iowa. Dr. Deyoe served in the Army from 1953-55 and was a member of the American Legion. He was Nevada Township clerk for 15 years and served on the Nevada School Board for six years. Dr. Deyoe is survived by his wife, Martha; a son and three daughters; and four grandchildren. Memorials may be made to the Nevada Public Library, 631 K Ave., Nevada, IA 50201.

Lawrence J. Gfell

Dr. Gfell (Ohio State '60), 81, Norwalk, Ohio, died March 18, 2017. A mixed animal veterinarian, he was the former owner of Fairview Animal Hospital in Norwalk. Dr. Gfell was a member of the Ohio and North Central Ohio VMAs and the Cleveland Academy of Veterinary Medicine. Active in his community, he was a past president of the Norwalk Rotary Club and was active with the Norwalk Chamber of Commerce and the Elks Club. Dr. Gfell is survived by his wife, Nancy; eight children; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

William P. Hayman Jr.

Dr. Hayman (Auburn '45), 93, Winter Park, Florida, died May 27, 2017. A diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Preventive Medicine, he retired as a colonel from the Army in 1975. During his military service, Dr. Hayman worked as a base veterinarian and troop food inspector and oversaw the sentry dog program.

Early in his career, he briefly practiced mixed animal medicine in Gainesville, Florida, before joining the Army Air Corps. In retirement, Dr. Hayman took over the family cattle ranch in south-central Florida. He was a member of the International Brangus Breeders Association, Southeast Brangus Breeders Association, and Florida Cattlemen's Association. Active in the state's citrus industry, Dr. Hayman served on the board of directors for the Haines City Citrus Growers Association for 17 years. In 2005, the FCA awarded his ranch the Florida Environmental Stewardship Award for outstanding conservation practices in the state. Dr. Hayman is survived by his wife, Maude; two daughters; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. His granddaughter-in-law, Dr. Kelly Rew (Florida '09), is a small animal veterinarian in Fernandina Beach, Florida.

Russell E. Howard

Dr. Howard (Colorado State '92), 56, Midvale, Utah, died May 29, 2017. Following graduation, he moved to Spokane, Washington, co-establishing several small animal clinics. Dr. Howard later practiced in Salt Lake City. Active in bluegrass music, he was a member of the Intermountain Acoustic Music Association.

Robert C. McClure

Dr. McClure (Iowa State '55), 85, Columbia, Missouri, died May 31, 2017. He was professor emeritus of veterinary anatomy at the University of Missouri College of Veterinary Medicine since 2000. Dr. McClure began his career as an instructor of veterinary anatomy at the Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine. From 1956-60, he served in the same capacity at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine, also earning his doctorate in veterinary anatomy from Cornell during that time. In 1960, Dr. McClure was named professor and chairman of the Department of Veterinary Anatomy at the University of Missouri. From 1972-73, while on sabbatical, he taught at the Vienna Institute of Veterinary Medicine as the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays Lectureship. Dr. McClure also served as a visiting professor at Tufts University from 1979-80 and in 1986.

Following his retirement from the University of Missouri, he was a professor of anatomy at the Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts for a year and served on the faculty of the American University of Antigua's veterinary school from 2010 until it shut down in 2012.

A past president of the American Association of Veterinary Anatomists, he was a member of the World Association of Veterinary Anatomists, American Association for Laboratory Animal Science, American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Missouri VMA. Dr. McClure was active with Kiwanis International, serving as an officer for the Missouri-Arkansas District and the Little Dixie Kiwanis in Columbia. He is survived by his wife, Sally W. Malloy, and five stepchildren.

Russell W. Wagner

Dr. Wagner (Michigan State '60), 84, Benzonia, Michigan, died May 17, 2017. He was a small animal veterinarian in Benzonia, incorporating holistic medicine into his practice, including acupuncture. Dr. Wagner was a founding member and a past president of the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society. He served in the Marine Corps from 1950-54.
