“Animal Transportation–Who Regulates What and How Can We Help Each Other to Improve the Health and Wellbeing of Animals During Transportation”

Have you ever wondered what roles the different federal agencies have in animal transportation? Dr. Dawn Fitzhugh, senior veterinary medical officer for pets and transportation at the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service’s Animal Care, and Dr. Sheena Tarrant, a veterinary medical officer at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, will provide an overview of their different regulatory authorities, their responsibilities, and what roles they have in the health and welfare of animals during transportation.

Speakers will discuss various opportunities available for veterinarians to advance One Health and share how they became involved in global projects. They will also cover options outside the usual voluntourism trips abroad and showcase pathways for promoting global One Health in ways that are attainable—and sustainable—for veterinarians from all sectors of the profession.
“To Spay or Not to Spay? And When? And How? The Risks and Benefits of Different Neutering Procedures”

Dr. Bruce Christensen will discuss the health and behavior risks and benefits in dogs of ovariohysterectomy, ovariectomy, hysterectomy, orchidectomy, vasectomy, and nonsurgical sterilization options with regard to breed, size, age, and environment.
“United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Panel on the HPAI outbreak”

A panel of senior experts will discuss the overall status of the ongoing highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) outbreak, the response efforts, trade, and mitigation efforts today and the future, including the topic of vaccination. Discussion panelists include those from the USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service, Agriculture Research Service, and Wildlife Services. The panel will be moderated by Dr. Gail Golab, AVMA’s chief veterinary officer.

Attendees have a chance to be a part of discussions on getting involved in organized veterinary medicine and other topics during this morning event. The event also features leadership stories from personal and professional perspectives through a panel discussion. Snacks are included.
Vet for a Day
10 a.m.-2 p.m., Juan P. Navarro Early College High School
The AVMA is partnering with Drs. Terrence Ferguson and Vernard Hodges of the critically acclaimed “Critter Fixers” Nat Geo TV series to host local Austin, Texas, middle and high school students and give them a first-hand look at the world of veterinary medicine. Veterinarian and veterinary technician volunteers will pair up with students to teach animal handling techniques. This event is sponsored by Hill’s Pet Nutrition and the Zoetis Foundation.
