Board position open following Weisman joining AVMA staff
The AVMA will have a special election for the unexpired District 6 director term on the Board of Directors. Nominations are due February 14, with the term beginning in April. District 6 covers the states of Illinois, Indiana, and Wisconsin.
Dr. Jim Weisman, who was elected to this position in 2023, will be stepping down from the Board to join the Association in the newly created position of chief of academic affairs, research, and accreditation.
Dr. Weisman is assistant dean for clinical education and a clinical associate professor at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine.
A 1997 Purdue University graduate, he is from Evansville, Indiana, where he was born, raised, and returned to practice veterinary medicine for 11 years. He then returned to Purdue to accept a position at the veterinary college where he oversees the clinical education curriculum and programming for the veterinary students. A key focus of his has been to ensure that these educational outcomes are modern and relevant for today’s veterinary graduates.
“It is truly an honor to take on this exciting new role at the AVMA. I look forward to joining AVMA members, staff and volunteers, and colleagues everywhere, in working to achieve AVMA’s mission and support and strengthen our profession,” Dr. Weisman said in a January 29 announcement.
Dr. Weisman is resigning from the Board effective April 21. The new director will take office following the special election to fill the unexpired term ending in July 2029. Nominations are due February 14, and voting will occur if the election is contested.
In addition, nominations are open for candidates to represent Districts 3 and 5 on the Board of Directors. District 3 encompasses the states of Alabama, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. District 5 covers Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia.
The new directors for Districts 3 and 5 will take office in July, when the current members’ terms expire. They will serve six-year terms, ending in 2031. Nominations are due February 1, and voting will be conducted March 1-31, if the elections are contested.
