The Association of Avian Veterinarians (AAV) held its annual meeting at ExoticsCon 2023 from August 20-24 in Boston.
Awards
Dr. T.J. Lafeber Avian Practitioner Award
Dr. Michelle Hawkins (Pennsylvania '97), Davis, California. A diplomate of the American Board of Veterinary Practitioners in avian practice, Dr. Hawkins is a professor of medicine and epidemiology at the University of California-Davis School of Veterinary Medicine. She also directs the California Raptor Center and serves as an associate director of the One Health Institute Leadership Team at UC-Davis. Dr. Hawkins is senior editor of the Journal of Avian Medicine and Surgery. She has served on the AAV executive board and advisory council and is a past member of several of the association’s committees.
Research Grant Awards
Avian health: Dr. Jennifer Langan, University of Illinois and the Chicago Zoological Society, received $9,630 for "Development of novel techniques for diagnosis and treatment of Macrorhabdus Ornithogaster in budgerigars (Melopsittacus undulatus)." Wild bird: Dr. David Roberts, Southern African Foundation for the Conservation of Coastal Birds, received $5,000 for "Antibiotic resistance and treatment plans for wounds for African penguins admitted for rehabilitation."
