Dr. Stuart Reid, selected to lead the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), will now stay on as head of the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in London for another three years.

The May announcement said, “The agreement was made in recognition of the complex and evolving challenges currently facing veterinary education and the wider higher education sector.”

Meanwhile, the AAVMC has reopened an international search for a new CEO. Dr. Andrew Maccabe left the position in June 2024 and Dr. Reid was announced as his successor in October 2024. He was slated to lead the AAVMC starting August 1 but will continue to serve as president and principal of the English veterinary college through to the fall of 2028.

“Recognizing a changing international landscape, my personal circumstances and the challenges facing higher education and the veterinary profession, I look forward to working with our exceptional staff, students, and partners as we build on the RVC’s global reputation and commitment to advancing knowledge,” Dr. Reid said in the announcement.

Dorothy Gray, AAVMC chief operations officer, will continue to serve as interim CEO for the association until a new CEO is found.

“We are deeply committed to finding the right individual to lead our organization into the future,” said AAVMC President and Board Chair Dr. Bonnie Rush in an announcement. “This is a pivotal moment for our association. Member institutions are facing unprecedented challenges. We will identify a leader who brings vision and a strong sense of collaboration to support our member institutions as we embark on the future of academic veterinary medicine.”
