We deal with uncertainty every day in our practices…even those of us who’ve been in practice for many years. It's part of the clinical environment, and yet there are some uncertainties that are more difficult to manage, especially those that affect us on a personal level. The recent changes in AVMA-GHLIT healthcare insurance have caused anxiety and fear for many of our members. Unfortunately, there’s no quick fix, because there is still so much that remains unknown. For more than 50 years, the GHLIT has consistently made medical coverage available for all veterinarians, including those who might have otherwise been considered uninsurable, or insurable at unaffordable premiums.
That’s changed now that New York Life Insurance, our long-term underwriter, has reached the decision that, under the new law, they can no longer afford to offer medical insurance coverage to a niche market, like ours. This means that GHLIT medical insurance coverage for AVMA members will be ending this year, effective midnight Dec. 31, 2013. I understand your concerns about finding affordable, effective coverage for you and your family. Even in the face of uncertainty there is always hope, but more practically, resolve. The hope we offer is the assurance that the AVMA cares deeply about our members, is focused on your needs and is making every effort to ensure that you have the resources and assistance you need to find ongoing healthcare coverage. The resolve is that both AVMA and the GHLIT are committed to keeping you fully informed of what’s going on as we work to make your healthcare coverage transition as stress-free and as seamless as possible.
Thank you for your support of AVMA and the GHLIT, especially in these trying times. Together, as a veterinary community, I know we can successfully manage these changes.
