Nominations for AVMA president-elect

2023-24 and 2024-25 Association years

Nominations are open for the position of AVMA president-elect for two separate Association years: 2023-24 and 2024-25.

For AVMA president-elect for the July 2023-June 2024 Association year, nominations will continue to be accepted until July 10, 2023. The deadline for candidates to formally announce candidacy and present to the House of Delegates has passed.

For the June 2024-July 2025 Association year, candidates have until April 1, 2023, to formally announce candidacy and present to the House of Delegates during its July 2023 meeting. After the meeting, nominations for this position will continue to be accepted until June 17, 2024.

According to the Bylaws and the House of Delegates Manual, candidates for election to the office of president-elect must meet both of the following requirements:

  • Have been voting members of the Association for a period of at least 10 continuous years immediately prior to their election
  • Have served in either of the following capacities:
    • At least one term on the Board of Directors, one full term on an AVMA council, two full terms on an AVMA committee, or four years as a delegate or alternate delegate in the House of Delegates;
    • Had extensive experience in a principal veterinary organization (state veterinary medical association), constituent allied veterinary organization, or regional veterinary medical association.

No candidate for one of these offices may run for any other office simultaneously. An individual who is serving on any AVMA entity (e.g., Board of Directors, House of Delegates, council, or committee) at the time of election must relinquish their seat on that entity when assuming office.

The president-elect and, when necessary, the president are elected at each annual session of the House of Delegates. The terms of the president and president-elect begin at the first regular meeting of the Board of Directors following the close of the annual session of the House of Delegates at which they were elected. The president-elect immediately and automatically succeeds to the office of president at the end of the term as president-elect. The president automatically succeeds to the office of immediate past president at the end of the term as president.

Specific duties and responsibilities of the officers are detailed in the AVMA Bylaws (PDF).

Those seeking AVMA officer positions must conduct their election campaigns in compliance with the rules for AVMA officer election campaigns (PDF).

Interested candidates should submit their nomination form and campaign guide form, along with a 1-2 page resume or CV to:
