Nominations for president-elect

Nominations are actively being sought for candidates to serve as AVMA president-elect for the 2023-2024 association year. The nomination deadline is April 1, 2022, for candidates to formally announce their candidacy and present to the House of Delegates at its July 2022 meeting. After that, nominations will continue to be accepted for this position until July 10, 2023.

For AVMA president-elect for the 2022-2023 association year, the nomination deadline to formally announce candidacy and present to the House of Delegates has passed. However, nominations remain open for this position until July 25, 2022.

According to the Bylaws and the House of Delegates Manual, candidates for election to the office of president-elect must meet the following requirements:

  • Have been voting members of the Association for a period of at least 10 continuous years immediately prior to their election; and
  • Have served in the following capacity:
    • At least one term on the Board of Directors, one full term on an AVMA council, two full terms on an AVMA committee, four years as a delegate or alternate delegate in the House of Delegates;
    • Or must have had extensive experience in a principal veterinary organization (state veterinary medical association), constituent allied veterinary organization, or regional veterinary medical association.

No candidate for one of these offices may run for any other office simultaneously. An individual who is serving on any AVMA entity (e.g., Board of Directors, House of Delegates, council, or committee) at the time of election must relinquish his or her seat on that entity when assuming office.

The president-elect and, when necessary, the president are elected at each annual session of the House of Delegates. The terms of the president and president-elect commence at the first regular meeting of the Board of Directors following the close of the annual session of the House of Delegates at which they were elected. The president-elect immediately and automatically succeeds to the office of president at the end of the term as president-elect. The president automatically succeeds to the office of immediate past president at the end of the term as president.

Specific duties and responsibilities of the officers are detailed in the AVMA Bylaws (PDF).

Those seeking AVMA officer positions must conduct their election campaigns in compliance with the rules for AVMA officer election campaigns (PDF).
