Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities Selection Committee

The Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities Selection Committee oversees assessment and selection of candidates to serve on the AVMA Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities®.

Charge/Objective

  • Develop and maintain a qualification review process for candidates for positions on the AVMA CVTEA®. This includes establishing and updating (as necessary) required qualifications for CVTEA candidates.
  • Determine the qualifications of CVTEA candidates.
  • Appoint 16 CVTEA members, including those representing:
    • Veterinary technicians (minimum of seven, two of whom must be non-program affiliated, one who must be an educator) in a veterinary technology program, who are currently licensed/registered/certified
    • Faculties of colleges of veterinary medicine (veterinarian)
    • Educator of veterinary technicians (veterinarian)
    • Clinical veterinary medicine—small animal (veterinarian)
    • Clinical veterinary medicine—large animal (veterinarian)
    • Two at-large (veterinarians)
    • Laboratory animal medicine (veterinarian)
    • Veterinary state boards (veterinarian or veterinary technician)
    • Veterinary medicine industry (veterinarian or veterinary technician)

Membership

The Committee is comprised of five members appointed by the Board of Directors to staggered, three-year, once-renewable terms. Committee members who are veterinarians must be AVMA members. Committee members who are veterinary technicians must be graduates of an AVMA accredited veterinary technology program who are currently licensed/registered/certified and will consist of the following:

  • Two former CVTEA members (one veterinarian and one veterinary technician)
  • One educator (either veterinarian or veterinary technician; the person must be currently engaged in academia; former CVTEA members are eligible for this category)
  • Two at-large members (one veterinarian who is an AVMA member and one veterinary technician)

None of the members of the committee may simultaneously serve on the CVTEA and in the House of Delegates or on the Board of Directors.

Committee members must have:

  • A willingness to select candidates with objectivity
  • A demonstrated interest in the scope and future of veterinary medicine
  • A demonstrated interest in veterinary technology education
  • An appreciation for and openness to the need for change in the future of veterinary technology education
  • A basic understanding of the role of accreditation in education

At its first meeting, the committee will establish terms for all initial members of the committee such that term lengths are staggered appropriately, with initial terms ending at the close of the HOD Annual Sessions in 2019, 2020, and 2021.

Chair

The chair of the committee is elected annually from and by the committee members.

Meetings

The committee will hold an initial meeting to discuss its operational process and then meet annually to discuss and update its operational process and to select members to the CVTEA. Conference calls may be conducted as required.

Reports

The committee will report to the AVMA Board of Directors.

Funding

AVMA will pay travel expenses of committee members in accordance with the AVMA travel policy.

Life expectancy

The committee will be reviewed in compliance with AVMA governance policies.
