AVMA/National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America Leadership Committee

The American Veterinary Medical Association/National Association of Veterinary Technicians in America (AVMA/NAVTA) Leadership Committee was established in 1990 as an ad hoc committee to improve communication, dialog, relationships, and future activities between the two organizations. In April 2005 the Board of Directors approved continued function of the committee.

Charge/Objective

  1. To ensure ongoing recognition and utilization of veterinary technicians as an integral part of the animal health care team.
  2. To increase cooperation, communication, and interaction between AVMA and NAVTA.
  3. To encourage growth of the veterinary technology profession and promote recruitment of potential students for veterinary technology programs. 

Membership, Method of Appointment, and Representation

The committee consists of eight members.  Three members of the committee represent the AVMA Board of Directors and are appointed to two-year terms by the chair of the Board of Directors.  Three members of the committee represent the NAVTA and are appointed by the NAVTA Executive Committee—the executive director, the president, and president-elect or their appointees. Two members of CVTEA serve in a non-voting capacity on the Liaison Committee—the CVTEA chair and one appointee by the CVTEA chair. CVTEA representation shall include one veterinarian and one veterinary technician.

Chair

The chair of the AVMA Board of Directors appoints the chair of the Liaison Committee.

Meetings

Meetings are held up to twice a year at the call of the committee chair, usually at the AVMA Annual Convention or in conjunction with an AVMA Board of Directors meeting.

Funding

The AVMA reimburses Board of Directors members and CVTEA members for expenses associated with attending meetings of the committee. The AVMA will pay for one half of NAVTA representatives travel expenses and food and lodging expenses for one day for each meeting.

Reports

The Committee reports to the Board of Directors.

Life Expectancy

The Committee will be reviewed in compliance with AVMA governance policies.
