Program: Of the registered attendees at the meeting, 2,704 were veterinarians, 427 were veterinary technicians, and 114 were veterinary students.
Awards: Robert W. Kirk Award for Professional Excellence: Dr. Sharon Center, Ithaca, New York, for outstanding achievements and dedicated service to the veterinary profession. An ACVIM-certified specialist in small animal internal medicine, Dr. Center is professor of internal medicine and one of six James Law professors at the Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. She is known for her expertise in hepatology and for her contributions to the field of small animal hepatology in the past three decades. Distinguished Service Award: Dr. Allen Roussel, College Station, Texas, for outstanding and dedicated service to the college in a volunteer capacity. An ACVIM-certified specialist in large animal internal medicine, Dr. Roussel is a professor and department head at Texas A&M University College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences. A diplomate of the European College of Bovine Health Management, he has served as president of the ACVIM Specialty of Large Animal Internal Medicine. ACVIM Foundation Distinguished Service Award: Robin Brogdon, Costa Mesa, California, for supporting the foundation’s efforts both monetarily and by raising awareness of its activities. Brogdon is president of BluePrints Veterinary Marketing Inc. and a past member of the ACVIM Foundation board of directors. Resident Research Award ($500): Dr. Christie Balcomb, food animal, University of California-Davis, for “Efficacy and pharmacokinetics of intravenous famotidine in adult cattle”; Dr. Jerome Calvalido, oncology, University of Guelph, for “Comparison of serum cytokine levels between dogs with multicentric lymphoma and healthy dogs”; Dr. Melissa Carpentier-Anderson, neurology, Veterinary Specialty Services and University of Missouri Veterinary Health Center, for “3D magnetic resonance imaging of the dog spine in Hansen type I intervertebral disk disease”; Dr. Ryan Dulaney, small animal internal medicine, Michigan State University, for “Quantifying urine elimination behaviors in cats using a video recording system”; Dr. E. Hathaway Fiocchi, small animal internal medicine, University of Pennsylvania, for “The use of darbepoetin alfa to stimulate erythropoiesis in dogs with chronic kidney disease”; Dr. Alison Khoo, small animal internal medicine, University of Saskatchewan, for “Effect of three resuscitative fluid protocols on N-terminal prohormone brain natriuretic peptide in healthy dogs”; Dr. Kursten Roderick, cardiology, Tufts University, for “Changes in NT-PROBNP associated with treatment and survival time in cats with congestive heart failure”; Dr. Breanna Sheahan, equine, University of Illinois, for “Normal ultrasonographic pleural thickness in clinically healthy adult horses”; Dr. Christine Sibigtroth, neurology, University of Missouri, for “Lumbar fractalkine and M2 microglia increase throughout disease progression in canine degenerative myelopathy”; and Dr. Vincent Ziglioli, small animal internal medicine, Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, for “Effects of levothyroxine administration and withdrawal on the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis in euthyroid dogs”
