ASPCA urges volunteerism in 150th celebration

An advocate against animal mistreatment hopes to log 150,000 volunteer efforts in 150 days.

The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is celebrating 150 years since its founding in April 1866. The organization’s 150 Days of Rescue campaign encourages that volunteers work at animal shelters, give animals foster homes, adopt animals, and advocate for laws intended to improve animal welfare.

The ASPCA also will give an animal shelter a $150,000 grant based on contributions of those who report their work to the ASPCA and name their favorite animal shelter or rescue group.

The organization started its celebrations April 10 with a parade and two public adoption events in New York City. About 300 animals were adopted, ASPCA information states.
