The Massachusetts VMA celebrated its 2014 Distinguished Service Award and Merit Award recipients on Oct. 4 during a day at Southwick’s Zoo in Mendon, Massachusetts.

Dr. Mary Labato (Tufts ’83) received the Distinguished Service Award, the most prestigious award that the MVMA confers on a member. Dr. Labato is an internist at the Foster Hospital for Small Animals at the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University. With the MVMA, she has served on many committees, as a director from 2000-2014, and as president. She is co-editor of the MVMA newsletter.

Dr. Liz Williamson (North Carolina State ’85) received the Merit Award for her work with the State of Massachusetts Animal Response Team; engagement with MVMA committees, notably the Emergency and Disaster Committee; and leadership with Project Samaná, a veterinary outreach program in Latin America and the Caribbean, and the program’s Project Mazunte, which sterilizes dogs to reduce predation on sea turtles.
