The American Veterinary Dental College has certified 12 veterinarians as founding diplomates of the new equine specialty within the college.

They were proposed as the founding diplomates in the final AVDC petition to the AVMA American Board of Veterinary Specialties for provisional recognition of the equine specialty. The candidates had passed the college’s first certification examination, administered online in September 2013.

The AVMA Board of Directors granted the specialty provisional recognition in April 2014 (see JAVMA, June 1, 2014).

The founding diplomates were announced and welcomed by the AVDC last November in Atlanta (see article), with Dr. Jennifer Rawlinson, Fort Collins, Colorado, as specialty chair.

The equine dental specialty’s petition for recognition stated that equine practitioners and horse owners have become more aware of the importance of oral health and high-quality dental services. With an increasingly interested AVDC member body and a supportive veterinary and public sector, the college said the time was right to establish an equine dental specialty.

The next certification examinations are an online examination in March and a practical examination in July at the Oquendo Education Center in Las Vegas.
